    The Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the "Institute of Physics") was formerly the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Central Research established in 1928 and the Institute of Physics of the Beiping Research Institute established in 1929. In 1950, the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded on the basis of the merger of the two institutes, and was renamed the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1958.

    The Institute of Physics is a multidisciplinary and comprehensive research institution focusing on basic research and applied basic research of physics. The research interests mainly focus on condensed matter physics, including condensed matter physics, optics, atomic and molecular physics, plasma physics, soft matter and biophysics, theoretical and computational physics, materials science and engineering. Many disciplines such as superconductivity, topology, nano, surface, and extreme conditions are at the forefront of world science and technology; Many fields, such as magnetism, optics, advanced materials and clean energy, have provided strong support for the development of the national economy. In addition to focusing on basic frontier issues and taking root in scientific research in Zhongguancun, the Institute of Physics actively responds to the national science and technology strategic layout. Invested in the construction of Huairou Science City of Beijing Science and Innovation Center (comprehensive conditional experimental device, material genome research platform and clean energy materials testing, diagnosis and R&D platform), Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Science and Innovation Center, and Yangtze River Delta Physics Research Center. As the "national team" and "people of the country", with "national affairs" at heart and "national responsibility" on their shoulders, the whole institute has made positive contributions to the development of the national economy and to the power of science and technology.

    The Institute has 12 laboratories in superconductivity, Magnetism, Surface physics, Photophysics, Advanced Materials and Structure Analysis, Nano-physics and Devices, Physics under Extreme Conditions, Clean energy, condensed Matter Theory and Computing, Soft Matter and Biophysics, Solid State Quantum Information and Computing, Huairou Research Department. Together with the International Center for Quantum Structure, the Condensed Matter Science Data Center, the Beijing Spallation Neutron Source Target Spectrometer Engineering Center, the Clean Energy Center, the Application Center of Superconductivity Technology, the Research and Application Center of Functional Crystals, the Research Center of Quantum Computing, and the Center of Applied Physics constitute the research system of the Institute of Physics. The technology Department and the public technology platform of each laboratory and research group together constitute the technical support system of the whole institute. In addition, the Institute of Physics is also the Regional Center for Large Instruments of Beijing Material Science and Nanotechnology, the leading unit of the Electron Microscopy Technology Alliance of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the co-construction unit of the Beijing Academy of Quantum Information Science.
