    Lanzhou University, abbreviated as LZU, is located in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province. The University is under the supervision of the administrative department of Education under The State Council, jointly built by the administrative department of Education under The State Council and the Government of Gansu Province. It is a national key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education of the PRC. It ranks among the national "first-rate universities and disciplines", "Project 985 " and "Project 211". 

    Lanzhou University was founded in 1909, originally named Gansu Law and Administration School. In 1928, it expanded to Lanzhou Sun Yat-sen University and underwent three more name changes from 1929 to 1944. In 1946, it was renamed National Lanzhou University. After the founding of People's Republic of China, in the adjustment of colleges and universities, it was identified as one of the country's 14 comprehensive universities. It was established as a national key university in 1960. Since the reform and opening up, Lanzhou University has been selected as a "Project 211" and "Project 985" construction university. In 2002 and 2004, Gansu Institute of Grassland Ecology and Lanzhou Medical College were merged into and returned to Lanzhou University. In 2017, it entered the world-class university construction university (Class A). In November 2021, it was selected into the list of "National College Graduates Employability Training Base". In July 2023, Lanzhou University was chosen as the first batch of pilot universities of the "National Excellence Plan".

    As of February 2024, Lanzhou University has two campuses in Chengguan and Yuzhong. There are 20,504 undergraduate students, 14,557 postgraduate students, 4,688 doctoral students, 3,069 full-time and part-time teaching and research staff. The university has a total of 46 teaching and research units, 99 undergraduate majors, 27 doctorate authorized first-level disciplines, 47 master's degree authorized first-level disciplines and 23 post-doctoral research mobile stations. According to the Report on Undergraduate Teaching Quality of Lanzhou University (2022-2023 academic year), there are 36 undergraduate teaching units and 3,625,185 volumes library paper document information resources in Lanzhou University. The campus covers a total area of 2348668.94 square meters.
